I can almost cut it. It’s El Niño thick - packed with heat and moisture. The trees around me seem confused. Some sprouted leaves early and then some flowers pollinated late. The air is thick with their pollen now. 100F degrees just tossed around casually by the animated weather people on loud TV screens. The entire week running on 3-digit temps color coded in a thick red.

The air is thick with noise. From the skies. Not just the sun beating down but with private jets, prop planes and MedEvac choppers - landing and taking off from an Air Force base nearby. Air Force… Forced Air.. ah, very thick with their flight patterns 24/7 right above my roof. There was a time, as a child… growing up near yet another Air Force base, I would hear fighter jets take off and run to my mother. Fear of the sonic boom mixed with awe. That awe is now jaded because the air is so thick with so many of these flying objects. Some unidentified, perhaps not Earthly. Would that still trigger awe? I wonder.

The air is thick with words, pictures, reels, misshapen pieces of content… I shrug, I am creating one right now. The collective thickness of all-things-social-media sometimes gets too heavy. I have taken to using a “locking App” for social media - one that gives me an allowance for the number of times per day I can open it. For the number of minutes I can stay before a caution notification pops up and threatens to relock it. An App that tries to hold me accountable with on-screen prompts like: “Why are you here?!” …that question lands on me like a thickly layered spread of (plant-based) butter! I often ask “Why am I here?!” having arrived in a room of my house in search of something that seemed very important five minutes ago OR perhaps, …having arrived well into my fourth decade of planetary existence and it seems like a good self inquiry to journal about. Sometimes overwhelm. The other day I wrote this formula in my journal: Excitement - Joy = Overwhelm. So, Overwhelm is a potent isolate. Just like most “isolates”, it carries a punch that can leave a trace on one’s nervous system. We screened my nonprofit documentary at London Climate Action Week several days ago. I was not in London. A different timezone. Unreliable Wi-Fi. Two experts joined us from another timezone. Anticipatory anxiety. I guess every event, every screening, every moment a filmmaker shows their work can be like this. The air was so thick that Saturday morning. Until the mental health expert started her meditation. I finally took a long exhale. Post-screening Q&A is where the air is truly the thickest. Having other experts always helps. This way I know I don’t have to have ALL the answers. That we can spread the audience reflections and audience questions… evenly, thinly over all of us and respond together. And, it doesn’t have to land on me like a thick lump of “But where will I get my protein from…?” Our other expert - a lifestyle medicine physician and amazing author pre-empted that ubiquitous query and added the notion of fiber to the discussion. I chuckled (internally) - imaginary fist bump going up, confetti in the air. The air was finally thick with excitement. Joy had entered the chat.

Though as I write this the air is thick (still). I have a giant task ahead of me - An entire Global Impact Campaign - an enormous vision board unfolding from the resplendent Crown Chakra over my head, spreading around my aura and in my favorite meditation, engulfing all the hearts on Planet Earth. This is an enormous vision of global conferences, panel discussions, university screenings, workshops, theatrical releases, marketing campaigns,… and most importantly, impact. Impact on hearts, minds and yes, guts. Gut is where most of our mood hormones are made. Ah, that air is thick with the microbiome. We need to keep them happy - carrots, apples, soybeans, leafy greens, lentils, legumes, beans -, which in all their splendid colors start filling up and nourishing my already ginormous vision of this Global Impact Campaign. Fueling this impact is all I can think of these days. Ah, the air is now thick but with hope for healing - flowing, in sync, with love - and with an ever blooming, ever receiving Crown Chakra.

I smile. I take a Long Exhale.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Or, hear and learn about stories of loss.

Songs by forlorn singers and musicians. Movies of heartbreak and loss. Documentaries on wars long past or dystopian nuclear winters imagined. News stories of genocides, climate disasters, energy crises - or the umbrella arch of the meta crises. Or more existentially dire - stories of how humanity succumbs to our own greed. All or any of these stories can make us go down memory lane, make us feel forlorn and wistful… or make for strong shockwaves of anticipatory loss for how our stay on this planet might unfold.

Regardless, there are varied ways we tell the story of loss. Personal, planetary. All of them wrapped up in emotional, colorful, physiological wrapping paper - with a bow of tears right on top.

Tears are funny. At times they arrive unannounced. Like tributes to the past. Or, just as a salute to reactivity we may be experiencing to a relationship in the present: A chronically imbalanced dynamic that has a biological or even a psycho-spiritual karmic hook painfully wedged inside our psyche. Or a twisted relationship with our own Self commandeered by a harsh inner critic. Or a relationship with material energy around us: food, money, cars… name any pattern - obsessive or not!

We well up with tears in a theater of choreography on stage and screen, or sometimes shudder at an actual theater of war being waged on faraway shores and straits, with reverberations at home or at the gas pump. And, of course, we well up with tears in times when it’s the theater of our own lives. Our families. Our bodies.

We tell the story of loss and we end it with resignations: We say people drift apart. We say life happens. We say the timing wasn’t right. We say they were taken too soon. We say their soul has found release. We say we were all helpless at the hands of a global pandemic. We say life sucks, and shit happens. We say it was a mistake. We say it was an accident. We say we have moved on. We say we won’t go down this lane again. We say we can drink it away. We say we can eat it away. We even say we can dance it away.

If I had a penny for every single way we tell the story of loss, and every single way we imagine we can beat this pain, - I’d be so rich I won’t need a fundraising campaign (more on that later!)

The central question to this discussion is: Why does the “story of loss” matter? Where does this profound sense of loss even come from?

I have had an opportunity to sit with loss for some time. Different types of loss. Over the decades, over the years, over the months and minutes - and this lived experience has helped me gain some semblance of understanding.

Most of the relationships I’ve seen fracture, including my own, fall into three quiet categories:

Death

Disease

Dysfunction

Three different doors. One shared experience: separation.

And underneath that separation, that rupture, that loss - something even more universal:

Trauma.

Yes. Trauma.

Death: The Loss We Cannot Negotiate With

Death is the cleanest and the cruelest. It does not argue. It does not explain. It does not offer repair. It simply takes.

When we lose someone to death, the trauma is not only in their absence - but in the sudden collapse of continuity. The voice we could call. The rituals we didn’t realize were anchoring us. The version of ourselves that only existed in their presence.

Gone.

Death leaves us with love that has nowhere to land. And the nervous system - designed for connection - struggles to metabolize a loss that cannot be resolved.

So we adapt.

Sometimes by becoming stronger. Sometimes by becoming busier. Sometimes by quietly numbing the places that hurt too much to feel.

Disease: The Loss That Happens While Someone Is Still Here

Disease is different. It does not always take all at once. It can stretch loss across months, years, even decades. With disease, we grieve someone who is still alive.

We watch as:
• Energy changes
• Personality shifts
• Roles reverse
• Conversations become smaller
• Futures become uncertain

The trauma here is ambiguous. There is no clean ending. No clear before and after. Just a slow erosion of what was once familiar. And in that space, something difficult can happen:

We begin to pull away - not because we don’t love them, but because staying fully present requires more emotional capacity than we have.

So we oscillate:
Between closeness and distance.
Between hope and anticipatory grief.
Between showing up and protecting ourselves.

Dysfunction: The Loss That Leaves the Body Confused

Dysfunction is perhaps the most complicated. Because here, the person is physically present - but relationally unsafe. This can look like:
• Chronic misunderstanding
• Emotional volatility
• Control, manipulation, or neglect
• Unresolved patterns repeating across generations

The trauma of dysfunction is not in a single event. It is in the pattern.

The unpredictability. The rupture without repair. The subtle, persistent erosion of safety.

And so the body learns: Stay alert. Stay prepared. Stay guarded.
Or, eventually: Leave.

But even when we leave physically, something often remains. A loop. A longing. A question that doesn’t resolve. A door closed - by us or them - but a door that still has a ‘giant handle’ on it.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" But the body does not make that distinction. I’ve mentioned the writings of Dr. Bessel Van Der Kolk in “The Body Keeps The Score” in a previous blog.

Unprocessed grief, chronic stress, and relational rupture don’t just live in thoughts - they take shape in the body.

Tight shoulders. A clenched jaw. A racing heart. A heavy chest. A nervous system that never quite stands down. And sometimes, over time - pain. Not metaphorical pain. Structural, persistent, physical pain.

For me, this became undeniable through my own experience with chronic pain. My migraines started and quickly intensified around multiple losses in my teenage years: Grandparents’ terminal diagnoses and ultimately, deaths in quick succession.

It’s like a herd of elephants losing their matriarch or a pride just suddenly losing the alpha that kept them together. I use these examples not just for simplicity but how, at age 19, watching a show on National Geographic Channel - I empathized and wept for the lost elephants and projected my own grief upon their guttural sounds.

Sounds. Feelings. That rising heart beat. Smells. Triggers. And, shooting pains.

What begins as discomfort slowly turns into something more chronic. Restrictive. At times, debilitating.

Of course, there are physical explanations. Posture. Load. Muscle imbalances. Life stage. Degenerative disease. Adverse side effects of medication. Improper form at the gym. Repetitive injury.

But what I couldn’t ignore was this: The periods when my pain flared most intensely often coincided with moments of emotional strain, relational rupture, or internal overwhelm.

It felt as though my body was holding something my mind had learned to move past too quickly. Therapeutically provoked and poked, I could come up with memories, what age I was when an event occurred, how it felt in my body and what it made it mean to me, for me, about me. Other times, it was a memory-less, event-less “state” — leaving modern emotional therapeutic care twiddling their CBT thumbs!

Regardless, the pain was and is real.

I would feel as though my spine - the very structure that holds me upright - was responding to the weight I have been carrying, silently, for years. Not just work. Not just responsibility. But grief. Disconnection. Unresolved endings.

How Loss Turns Us Against Ourselves

No matter which door loss enters through - death, disease, or dysfunction - it often triggers the same internal response: Self Abandonment.

Our nervous systems are designed to keep us functioning. That’s their single-point agenda.

In keeping up that “functioning”, in an effort to protect us from what we can’t safely relationally hold, our nervous systems can sometimes begin to severe the mind-body-spirit connection. Not consciously. Not deliberately. But quietly, through:

• Over-functioning
• Numbing
• Distraction
• Hyper-independence
• Emotional shutdown

And in doing so, we pull away from the very place we most need to stay connected to: Our own body.

<a It Is the Messenger.

For a long time, I saw my physical symptoms as something to fix. Something inconvenient. Something slowing me down. But slowly - through awareness, through stillness, through listening - I began to see something different.

My body wasn’t breaking. It was speaking.

The tension was communication. The pain was information. The fatigue was a boundary I had not yet honored. The body was not asking me to push harder. It was asking me to return. I needed to decode its vocabulary. Like in movies, when alien life makes contact and the humans tune into our radio frequencies marveling at the “sounds” but knowing deep within our bones that it’s “life from another planet” — well, LOL, - in emotional wellness speak - that other planet might just as well be our material, physical bodies!

Returning to the Body

When relationships fracture, we rush outward for resolution (or blame). We replay conversations. We search for meaning. We try to fix what cannot be fixed.

But the only place where repair is consistently available is inward.

Returning to the body is not dramatic. It is subtle. Repetitive. Quiet. It is proactive. It needs an everyday ritual of sitting down with this…well… ‘alien messaging’ and putting on our Turing Headphones and listen very, very closely.

Sometimes it looks like: Noticing your breath without forcing it. Softening your jaw. Sitting differently. Eating slowly. Letting an emotion move through instead of overriding it.

Sometimes it looks like doing less.
Sometimes it looks like stopping.

What Cannot Be Repaired, and What Can

We cannot undo death. We cannot always heal disease. We cannot force dysfunction into resolution. But we can choose something else. We can choose not to disappear alongside the relationship. We can choose not to override the signals of our own body in the process.

Reclaiming the Thread

Maybe continuity is not about keeping every relationship intact as it was. Maybe it is about having it alter form and observing it as it does so - with an observer’s mind.

Maybe it is about making that journey inward and redeveloping or strengthening connection to Self, even when connection to others is disrupted.

The body - despite everything - remains.

It holds the imprint of loss. But it also holds the pathway back. And every time we return - to breath, to sensation, to presence - we begin to release what was never meant to be carried alone.

The Long Exhale

Loss will come. In one form or another, we will all meet:

Death

Disease

Dysfunction

And sometimes, we will feel that loss not just in our hearts - but in our bodies. In the spine. In the chest. In the quiet places we’ve learned to ignore.

But we are not meant to live there permanently. We can return. Gently. Gradually. Back into the body. Back into presence. Back into ourselves.

And in that return - we do not erase the loss. But we loosen its grip. And perhaps, for the first time - we allow ourselves a long, steady exhale.

Subscribe now

Thanks for reading The Long Exhale! As Dr. Kolk says: The Body Keeps The Score!

Not memory as story alone - but memory as biology. Enter epigenetics!

Epigenetics helps explain how experiences such as famine, chronic stress, genocide, displacement, racism, war, or prolonged fear can alter how genes are expressed, without changing the genes themselves. These biological “settings” - shaped by survival - can be passed down across generations, especially when trauma occurs during sensitive windows like pregnancy, early childhood, or adolescence.

Were my teetotaler grandparents impacted by the Partition of Punjab in 1947? They were in their twenties then! Was the bloodshed, the rioting, the largest human transmigration in modern history since WW2 just etched onto their DNA and showed up years later? Am I carrying a signature of the same trauma even though I am a skip-level descendent?

In this light, cancer is no longer only a cellular malfunction. Or diabetes is not just an uncooperative pancreas. Nor is burnout merely a personal failure of resilience.

They are also signals - echoes - shaped by:

Chronic inflammation

Hormonal disruption

Dysregulated stress response systems

Metabolic strain

Immune imbalance

All systems deeply responsive to environment, nourishment, and care.

Breast and prostate cancers are hormone-sensitive. Type 2 diabetes is stress- and metabolism-sensitive. Burnout lives at the intersection of nervous system overload and metabolic depletion.

The throughline is not fate - it is vulnerability shaped over time.

<div Lifestyle Medicine enters the story - not as a wellness trend, but as a form of biological reconciliation. A concept I was introduced to in 2018 and have since taken a deep dive into! Practicing it every day of my life since April 2018. Trying it on for myself before I could ever write this essay or conduct a research study or produce a documentary on the subject.

Lifestyle Medicine recognizes that while we may inherit vulnerability, we are not condemned to repeat it.

It focuses on six interconnected pillars:

Nutrition

Physical activity

Sleep

Stress regulation

Social connection

Meaning and purpose

These are not “soft” interventions. They are powerful epigenetic signals.

And among them, plant-forward, whole-food nutrition plays a central role.

Plant-Forward Nutrition and Epigenetic Resilience

A plant-forward, whole-food dietary pattern does something quietly radical: it creates an internal environment that tells the body it is safe to repair.

From an epigenetic perspective, plant-rich diets:

Reduce chronic inflammation - a known driver of cancer progression and metabolic disease

Improve insulin sensitivity and metabolic flexibility

Support estrogen and androgen balance through fiber-mediated hormone clearance

Feed the gut microbiome, which directly influences immune regulation and gene expression

Provide polyphenols and phytonutrients that modulate tumor-suppressor pathways

In contrast, highly processed, animal-heavy, low-fiber diets - especially under chronic stress - reinforce the very biological conditions that trauma primes: inflammation, insulin resistance, hormonal dysregulation, oxidative stress.

For me, this realization was not ideological. It was personal. It reframed my body not as broken, but as over-adapted to threat.

Burnout, I came to see, wasn’t weakness.
It was an intelligent system running an outdated survival script.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" Multigenerational Signal

What if burnout isn’t just about modern work culture?

What if it is also the body asking:

Are we finally safe enough to stop bracing?

The teenage me who lost her anchors didn’t collapse - she over-functioned. She excelled. She carried on. She learned to be competent under pressure. That strategy worked - until it didn’t.

Burnout arrives when the cost of carrying unprocessed loss, inherited vigilance, and unrelenting productivity finally exceeds the body’s capacity.

Seen this way, healing is not about optimization.
It is about downshifting biology from survival to regeneration.

Healing Is Also Heritable

Here is the part that brings me the most peace.

Epigenetic marks are not permanent. They respond - quickly and profoundly - to changes in environment, nourishment, rest, and care.

When we choose:

Fiber over depletion

Rest over relentless output

Regulation over endurance

Connection over isolation

we are not just managing symptoms.

We are participating in biological repair - for ourselves, and possibly for those who come after us.

In that sense, lifestyle medicine and plant-forward nutrition are not prescriptions. They are acts of lineage-level compassion.

They say:

The story doesn’t end where the trauma began.

Closing the Circle

I still grieve my grandmother and grandfather, indeed all my grandparents and my father - and what’s left of my mother. I still feel the ripple their absence created in my life.

But I no longer see their deaths only as tragedy. I see them as part of a larger, unfinished story - one that I am now helping to rewrite through research, storytelling, and the daily practice of care.

The pearls didn’t disappear.
They scattered -

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Learning to restring scattered pearls! I drew a timeline of my entire life - periods where I felt joy, reached a cherished milestone, others where I felt sadness and others yet which were a nondescript run around the sun. I developed a Self-Reflection App called #yourburnoutstory - check it out on our documentary’s website.

My “burnout stripes” Other times they are subtle, almost convincing in their quietness. You think you’re fine. Functional. Back on your feet.

Until you aren’t.

Here’s the insight: What changes over time is not whether the wave comes - but whether you recognize it early enough to stop fighting the ocean.

Mistaking Strength for Armor

For much of my life, I equated strength with fortification.

I believed in endurance. In powering through. In building myself into something unbreakable. Health, I thought, came from adding - more discipline, more protein, more rigor, more control. Ah! protein.

My diet reflected that worldview.

I was deeply committed to animal protein - convinced it was not only optimal, but necessary. Protective. Essential. I believed it safeguarded vitality and prevented chronic illness. This belief wasn’t abstract; it was emotional, almost ancestral.

By the time I turned eighteen, I had already lost my grandparents. Their lives had ended too early for my understanding to hold the complexity of biology, culture, or history. What I did understand was narrative - and the one available to me was blunt: they were vegetarian, therefore undernourished, therefore vulnerable.

Animal protein, I told myself, was the antidote.

It felt like certainty. It felt like safety. It felt strong. What it wasn’t, in hindsight, was curiosity. A deadly curiosity…one that I shared with my father (and would prove fatal for him).

When the Body Interrupts the Story

My health did not improve the way I expected it to.

Instead, I accumulated symptoms - quiet at first, then louder. Chronic inflammation. Hormonal disruption. A haywire HbA1c. Fatigue that no amount of “clean eating” or optimization could resolve. Burnout that didn’t respond to rest alone.

The wave returned.

I did what many people do when certainty fails: I tightened my grip on it. I tried harder. I trusted the narrative over the evidence accumulating in my body.

But bodies are patient truth-tellers.

They don’t argue ideology. They don’t negotiate belief. They don’t preach. At times, They don’t even scream. They simply respond. And, They keep score!

Eventually, the dissonance became too large to ignore. Will the real slim shady please stand up?!!

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

A wave pattern over the blurred silhouette of my body - emotional and physical

The Wave Pattern

What I understand now is this: burnout is not a moral failure, nor is it an isolated event. It is a wave pattern - the result of sustained friction between how we live and what our bodies can metabolize.

Every wave carries information.

Some tell us we are overworking.
Others tell us we are undernourishing.
Some signal grief that has not been integrated.
Others reveal belief systems we’ve inherited but never examined.

Time for a short story.

My father was an anthropologist working with indigenous populations in a geopolitically unstable region of the world. He would talk of animal sacrifice, being welcomed into the tribe and to have been offered a share of the feast as a mark of trust and respect.

My father was my hero. I imagined him going on adventures to lands that few dared to go, and one day follow in his footsteps and explore cuisines — and more importantly, the variety of animals, birds and insects… to eat. Snakes, frogs, snails, monkey brains, grasshoppers, quails, ostrich egg omelet…oh yes! by the time I was 28 years old - I had tried them all. A hungry microbiome with a fetish for endless animal protein.

I no longer believe that.

Resilience is relational. It is the ongoing practice of listening before the body has to shout. Of adjusting course before collapse becomes the teacher. Of understanding that burnout will visit again - not because you failed, but because life is dynamic and systems are imperfect.

Each wave asks a slightly different question.

Can you hear it sooner this time? Can you respond with curiosity instead of force?
Can you choose repair over repetition? Can you add a greater variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, lentils, seeds, legumes and funghi in your life? Can you drink more water? Can you take a nap? Can you stretch your arms? Can you do that one extra rep while in the gym - or choose not to? Can you meditate and let that exhale be really loooooong…?

Learning to Ride, Not Conquer

I don’t write this from a place of arrival. Or the arrogance of absolute knowledge on survivorship.

I write it from the middle of the ocean, with better tools than I had before. With fewer illusions about permanence. With more respect for what bodies know long before minds concede.

Burnout is not something I aim to defeat. It is something I have learned to read. Chronic inflammation. Hormonal disruption. Nervous system dysregulation. None of them explained why exhaustion felt not merely physical, but existential - why it carried grief, disorientation, and a quiet sense that something fundamental had gone wrong. I blamed my genes (mostly my father’s!)

At the time, I didn’t yet have the language to say this, but I do now: my body was offering evidence.

Not evidence of weakness - but evidence of misalignment.

When the Personal Became Unavoidable

My father’s passing during the global pandemic in August 2020 marked a rupture I could not metabolize through productivity. Loss arrived at the same moment the world slowed, fractured, and revealed the fragility of systems we had been told were stable.

The pandemic did not create burnout. It exposed it.

Across industries and households, people experienced exhaustion not as a temporary state, but as a sustained condition. Physical depletion fused with moral injury, caregiving strain, economic precarity, and a growing awareness that the social contract itself was under stress.

What many of us felt in our bodies was not random. It was patterned.

Grief, burnout, and illness were no longer isolated experiences - they were synchronized.

And that synchronization raised a question I could not “unask” (is that a word?):

What if exhaustion isn’t the problem to be solved, but the signal asking us to pay attention?

From Lived Experience to Research

That question became the foundation of my nonprofit work.

At The Virsa Foundation Inc, and through our research and advocacy program JIVINITI, we began treating exhaustion not as anecdote, but as data. Not something to dismiss, but something to investigate.

This inquiry eventually led to The GAIA Study (2021 - 2023) - one of the largest industry-independent nonprofit studies conducted during the pandemic, examining burnout, health outcomes, nutrition, stress, and lived experience at scale.

What emerged was not a simple story of overwork. It was a systems story.

Burnout correlated with dietary patterns, inflammation, mental health outcomes, caregiving burdens, and socioeconomic stressors. It mapped onto inequity. It tracked with uncertainty. It mirrored the fractures in our food systems, healthcare systems, and economic models.

Individual exhaustion, it turned out, was collective evidence.

From Data to Story

Research alone, however, rarely moves culture.

That realization led to the creation of the feature documentary Third Degree Burnout – A Survivor’s Guide (2024-2025). The film brings together scientists, clinicians, psychotherapists, chefs, climate communicators, and lived experience - not to offer silver-bullet solutions, but to connect the dots. (Yes, that’s our mission: Connecting the Dots between Public and Planetary Health)

Burnout is not just about work.
It is about how we eat.
How we grieve.
How we care.
How we measure value.
How we ask bodies to endure what systems refuse to change.

The film’s recognition - including multiple international awards and a United Nations Award for International Impact - affirmed something important: people are hungry for frameworks that make sense of their exhaustion without blaming them for it.

Exhaustion as Evidence

Over time, a set of core values crystallized - not as abstract principles, but as responses to what exhaustion had revealed.

These values now anchor JIVINITI’s work (our documentary’s poster pays homage to it!):

Evidence
Exhaustion is not imaginary. Burnout is not a trend. Bodies carry information long before institutions respond. Evidence lives in data - and in lived experience. There’s evidence of this burnout at a personal level and at a planetary level.

Insight
Fatigue asks better questions than productivity ever did. Insight comes from pausing long enough to interpret the signal, not override it. What we see, we cannot unsee! What we feel, we cannot un-feel!

Choices
When people are informed rather than shamed, choices expand. Burnout narrows possibility; understanding restores agency. Awareness of choices helps us understand additionally who dictates (or subverts!) these choices and ultimately who is able to afford and have access to healthier choices - and most critically, who not?!!!

Boundaries
Chronic exhaustion is often the cost of boundary erosion - personal, institutional, planetary. Repair requires saying no to what harms, even when it is normalized. How do we learn to say NO? How is the planet telling us NO! Not Anymore?!

Resilience
Not the brittle kind that demands endless endurance - but the regenerative kind that allows for rest, repair, and reorientation.

A Different Kind of Orientation

The Long Exhale exists because I no longer believe we need more advice on how to push through.

What we need is a different orientation - one that treats exhaustion as meaningful, contextual, and worthy of attention.

If you are tired in ways that rest alone does not resolve, you are not broken.
If your body is asking questions your environment cannot answer, you are not alone.

Exhaustion is not the end of the story.
It is the evidence that something deeper is asking to be seen.

And listening - to bodies, to data, to grief, to systems - may be the most radical act of care we have left.

Thanks for reading The Long Exhale! If you’re here, you may be carrying something that hasn’t had a name yet. Not just exhaustion - but a deeper sense that the stories we’re given about productivity, health, success, and resilience no longer explain what you’re feeling in your body or observing in the world.

The Long Exhale exists for that space.

I’m Nivi - a nonprofit owner, an independent filmmaker, researcher, consumer behavior marketer and former corporate executive. Much of my work sits at the intersection of public health, food systems, and culture. But this space is less about credentials and more about orientation.

The Signal.

For years, I lived inside high-functioning (yet dysfunctional?) systems with high-performance optics that rewarded speed and optimization. I watched, witnessed and experienced burnout get reframed as an individual problem - something to fix, manage, or push through - rather than recognized as a signal.

A signal from bodies.
A signal from systems.
A signal from meaning itself.

This Substack is not here to offer quick answers or self-improvement strategies. It’s here to slow things down - to notice what becomes visible when we stop overriding ourselves.

Here, I write about:

Burnout as a biological, cultural, and economic signal

Bodies that speak through inflammation, fatigue, and anxiety

Food systems and health narratives that don’t quite add up

Grief, identity, and the quiet work of making meaning

Creative work as a form of inquiry, not output

Some essays will be personal. Others will be investigative or reflective. All of them are written with the belief that thinking clearly and feeling honestly are not separate acts.

You don’t need to agree with everything written here. You don’t need to arrive with certainty. You only need a willingness to pause.

If modern life has left you feeling unmoored - too sensitive for its pace, too thoughtful for its slogans, too tired to keep pretending you’re fine - you are not alone. And you are not failing.

You are responding.

This is a space for the long view. For the intersectional view. Where things overlap or where they fall in between the cracks. For context instead of cure. For unraveling the Third Degree Burnout we see everywhere (including within us) and decoding Survivorship. This is a space for orientation instead of urgency.

I’m glad you’re here.

- Nivi.

Thanks for reading The Long Exhale!
